Following the directives of the National Executive Council (NEC) of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) the Ahmadu Bello University branch of the union has commenced a 14-day warning strike from today, 13th October, 2025.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after the branch’s congress, the chairman, ASUU ABU branch, Professor Haruna Jibrin said the goal of the strike is to compel the government to conclude the renegotiation of 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement based on Nimi Briggs Committee’s Draft Agreement of 2021.
Professor Jibrin said, the victimization of academics in Kogi State University (KSU) and Lagos State University (LASU), as well as the release of withheld three-and-half months salaries on account of the 2022 strike action form part of the reasons for the action.
While the release of unpaid salaries of staff on sabbatical, part-time and adjunct appointments due to the application of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and the release of outstanding third-party deductions such as pension
deductions, check-off dues and cooperative contributions should be made unconditional without further delay.
He also said that funding for revitalization of public universities and payment of arrears of 25% – 35% salary award for 12 months is equally very important.
According to the union, since the ultimatum was issued, it was only invited to meet with the Federal Government renegotiation team led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed on Friday 10th October, 2025.
“The team presented to us, a document that was totally alien to issues discussed at plenary, particularly the item on conditions of service.
“Our union has always demonstrated patience with the government in addressing issues. We have waited for 12 years (4,380 days)”.
Any violation of this strike action will be met with severe sanctions, the union warned.
