They now sit second in their group, tied with Israel but six points behind Norway, though they hold a game in hand.
Germany, another powerhouse, is facing similar uncertainty. Their inconsistency showed in a 2-0 defeat to Slovakia and an unimpressive win over Northern Ireland. With a crucial return match in Belfast on the horizon, their path to qualification remains uncertain.
Belgium, long reliant on their “Golden Generation,” also find themselves under pressure. A disappointing draw with North Macedonia has complicated their campaign, and their upcoming encounter with Wales may decide whether they advance directly or risk the playoff route.
Across Africa, the stakes are just as high. Ivory Coast must win both of their remaining fixtures to stay in control of their group, while Gabon wait closely for any slip. Cameroon, meanwhile, trail Cape Verde by four points, and another Cape Verde victory could end their hopes altogether.
Nigeria’s situation looks grim as well. With only 11 points from eight matches, they are six points adrift of South Africa. A single point for South Africa in their next game would eliminate the Super Eagles, leaving their qualification hopes dependent on other results.
