The Nigerian medical community and social media have been thrown into mourning after the sudden death of a young resident doctor, Dr. Femi Rotifa, who allegedly collapsed and died after being forced to work a marathon 72-hour call duty at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), Port Harcourt.
According to reports, the young doctor, fondly known as Dr. Femoski, had already finished his shift but was allegedly ordered by a senior colleague to continue working because of staff shortages. Sadly, his body could not take it.
“I Need Rest” – His Last Words Ignored
Multiple accounts claim that Dr. Rotifa told his superior that he wasn’t feeling well and needed rest, but his plea was waved off. With no choice, he carried on with the punishing schedule.
Tragically, he was later discovered collapsed in the call room. Colleagues rushed him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but despite desperate attempts to revive him, he was confirmed dead.
Social Media Erupts With Anger
As soon as the heartbreaking news broke, Nigerians flooded social media with outrage.
Some colleagues shared how they too have been forced to work under life-threatening conditions.
One nurse narrated how she even lost her pregnancy because her superior refused to give her rest.
Many described Nigeria’s hospitals as “graveyards”, not just for patients but also for the doctors meant to save them.

Dr. Femi was not just any doctor. He was a surgery resident doctor at RSUTH and a former President of the Port Harcourt University Medical Students’ Association (PUMSA).
Loved by his colleagues and juniors alike, he was known for his brilliance, humility, and dedication to the medical profession. His death has left a gaping hole in the hearts of many.
