Open Letter to the Nigerian National Assembly

*The Senate and House of Representatives, Federal Republic of Nigeria

THE URGENT NEED TO INTERROGATE THE CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF ON HIS RECENT STATEMENT REGARDING THE LINK BETWEEN INSECURITY AND THE 2027 POLLS

Dear Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members,

I, as a concerned citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, write to you today with a deep sense of urgency and profound concern regarding the recent public statement made by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on August 21st, 2025. The CDS stated that the current surge in killings and insecurity is linked to the 2027 elections, with political actors allegedly sponsoring criminals to destabilize communities and discredit the government. This is not just a passing comment; it is a serious and complex assertion that demands immediate and thorough scrutiny from the legislative arm of our government.

The National Assembly, as the custodian of our democratic principles and the primary oversight body for the executive arm, has a constitutional duty to investigate this matter. I urge you to immediately invite the Chief of Defence Staff for a public, televised interrogation to clarify and provide evidence for his statement. This is crucial for several reasons, and I have outlined key areas for your line of questioning to ensure the interrogation is comprehensive and purposeful.

  1. The Perils of Politicizing National Security
The CDS’s statement risks the dangerous politicization of our security challenges. By publicly attributing the violence to political opponents, he may be creating a narrative that diverts attention from the fundamental issues of security sector reform and accountability. This is not an abstract issue; it can erode public trust in both the military and the political process. Your interrogation should seek to understand:
    A. What specific intelligence or evidence supports the claim that political actors are behind the surge in violence?
    B. How does this narrative impact the operational effectiveness of our security forces?
    C. Does it not risk creating a perception that failures are due to external sabotage rather than internal weaknesses?
  2. Contradictory Historical Context and Institutional Failure
The CDS’s statement overlooks historical facts. He claims that the current spike in insecurity is unique and tied to politics, yet Nigeria has experienced periods of even greater violence in the past that were largely attributed to non-political factors like socio-economic grievances and religious extremism. The National Assembly must ask:
    A. Given that previous spikes in insecurity were not primarily framed as political, why is the current crisis being categorized differently?
    B. Is this statement an attempt to deflect responsibility from the security forces’ failure to contain the current threats, such as banditry and terrorism?
    C. What specific measures have the armed forces implemented to address these security challenges, and what are the quantifiable results?
  3. The Atmosphere of Blame and Persecution
A high-ranking military official’s public accusation against unnamed political individuals creates a dangerous atmosphere of suspicion and potential persecution. It could be used as a pretext to unfairly target and frame opposition members. The National Assembly must protect the integrity of our democratic space by ensuring that such serious accusations are backed by verifiable evidence.
    A. What concrete actions has the military taken to bring these alleged political sponsors to justice?
    B. Could this statement be misused to justify the harassment or illegal detention of political opponents?
    C. How can the Nigerian people be assured that this narrative will not be used to undermine democratic principles and processes as we approach the 2027 elections?

Your invitation and subsequent interrogation of the Chief of Defence Staff are not just a matter of oversight; they are a demonstration of the National Assembly’s commitment to democratic governance, transparency, and accountability. It is an opportunity to show the Nigerian people that no one, regardless of their position, is above questioning, especially when their words have the power to shape the political and security landscape of our nation.

I trust that you will act swiftly and decisively in the interest of our country’s peaceful well-being.

Sincerely,
Comrade, Ibrahim Garba Wala,
Concerned Nigerian Citizen
