Africa’s Median Age Trapped Under Geriatric Rule

Africa prides itself as world’s youngest continent with median age of 19 but trapped under geriatric rule by men who spend half their time in hospitals, off the shores of Africa, for medical care. Former Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan recently suggested African presidents should not be above 50, “because you need to stay awake 24hrs, older men spend 50% time in hospital”. Verily, Africa can’t breathe under ailing rulers.

It is consequent upon this that recent findings have revealed the followings as some of Africa’s ailing leaders, some of whom are rightly tagged as “sit-tight”.

Top on the list in 2026:

Cameroon’s Paul Biya — 93: President since 1982. World’s oldest non-royal head of state. Just started 8th term in Nov 2025. Spent 10 weeks in Europe June-Aug 2026, came back weak, still no VP. Rarely seen, sleeps during meetings. Rules from Geneva hotels. Country 70% under 35.

Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang — 84: In power since 1979 (47 years) — longest serving in Africa. Son is VP preparing takeover. Frequent trips to US/Spain for treatment.

Ivory Coast’s Alassane Ouattara —  84: Sworn in for 4th term Dec 2025 after banning opponents. Has prostate/cardiac issues, frequent Paris trips.

Zimbabwe’s Emmerson Mnangagwa — 84: Couped Mugabe in 2017. Looks frail, slurred speech. Pushing to extend term beyond 2028 via constitutional change.

Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni — 81/82: President since 1986 (40 years). Just sworn 7th term May 2026. Removes age limits, term limits. Visibly limping, but still jogging for camera.

Congo Brazzaville’s Denis Sassou-Nguesso — 82: 39 years in power, oil-rich, always in France over health issues.

Nigeri’s Bola Tinubu — 73/74: Not oldest but speculation biggest. Aides call trips to France “working vacation”. Punch newspaper listed him among ageing rulers who spend huge time abroad. Slurred speech, walking stick moments fuel rumours.

Malawi’s Peter Mutharika — 85: Returned Oct 2025 after being out, now oldest comeback president.

Common pattern: Change constitution, ban opposition, treat in France/Switzerland, rule via family (son/VP), median age of citizens 18-19 but President 80+.

Way out of the old, ailing, sit-tight African president “trap” — it’s not prayer, it’s structure. What has worked where it worked:

1. Term limits that bite – Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria 1999-2015, Kenya — when constitution says 2 terms = 2 terms, no “constitutional amendment”. Need: Entrench it so parliament alone cannot change it — require referendum + 75% majority. ECOWAS Court should enforce it.

2. Age cap + mandatory health disclosure. Rwanda has proposal: no one above 70 can run, plus yearly independent medical exam published. Nigeria, Uganda youth are pushing same. Jonathan’s idea: max entry age 55-60, so you finish by 65.

3. Real power in Ptime Minister/Institutions, not President. Togo moved to parliamentary system May 2025 — President is 86-year-old figurehead, but Prime Minister runs government. Reduces “one man is country” disease. Stronger/Real Independent Electoral Commission + Judiciary that can sack president — like Kenya Supreme Court did in 2017.

4. Youth takeover of party structures, not just protest. Gen Z Kenya 2024, Senegal Diomaye Faye 2024 (44-yr-old elected), Burkina/Ibadan examples show: youth win when they form party, not just tweet. In Nigeria, Not-Too-Young-To-Run brought age to 25/35, but money still blocks. Solution: public campaign funding + diaspora funding for young candidates.

5. Stop medical tourism loophole. Law: President must treat in national hospital. If you build world-class hospital for yourself in Abuja, everyone benefits. India did just that.

6. Vice Presidency must be meaningful: Currently VP is spare tyre. If president is absent 90 days for health, VP automatically becomes acting with full powers — no “cabal letter”.

Bottom line: Africans don’t hate old men, they hate old ideas + no exit. If a 90-year-old is sharp like Mahathir, fine. Problem is ailing men hiding illness, killing succession, using state money for French hospitals while citizens die in bad clinics.

For Nigeria specifically: 2027 is chance — demand debates, health record release, and don’t vote “from top to bottom” blindly as demanded by Party Mobilizers.
