Midweek Auto-crash Claims 4 In Uyo

By Patrick Titus, Uyo

Perhaps due to over-speeding and poor roads traffic management, four persons have been confirmed dead in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State following an auto-crash that involved a speeding vehicle that rammed into another conveying sachet water delivery on Wednesday’s evening, October 21, 2026.

The accident, occurred at the intersection opposite Shelter Afrique on the busy Udom Emmanuel Boulevard that leads to Victor Attah International Airport.

According to eyewitness accounts of the incident, the speeding vehicle which was coming from the Airport direction was attempting to take a turn at the Ibiaku u-turn when it rammed into the sachet water delivery vehicle resulting in the death of four after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers posed by the Ibiaku U-turn, a busy intersection serving motorists travelling between Uyo metropolis, the airport corridor, Shelter Afrique and several surrounding communities.

Observers have expressed concerns that the junction, which receives traffic from multiple directions, appears not to have adequate safety infrastructure, including a properly designed roundabout, clear advance warning signs, effective speed-control measures and other traffic-management facilities capable of protecting road users.

The absence of such safeguards, have repeatedly exposed motorists and passengers to avoidable risks, particularly where vehicles approach at high speed while others attempt to turn across the flow of traffic.

The prompt removal of accident victims, damaged vehicles and other debris from the scene may restore traffic movement, but it does not address the underlying conditions that could lead to another fatal collision.

For residents and commuters who regularly use the road, the fear is that another tragedy may occur unless the relevant authorities take decisive preventive action.

Possible interventions by government and relevant traffic control management, include a professional traffic-safety assessment, the installation of conspicuous warning signs, appropriate speed-control measures, improved road markings and lighting, and the redesign of the junction where necessary. Traffic-calming devices should be introduced after proper engineering assessment to ensure they do not create additional hazards on the busy highway.

The authorities should also examine whether a properly engineered roundabout, signalised intersection or another suitable traffic-control arrangement would provide the safest long-term solution.

Beyond Ibiaku, the incident presents an opportunity for a wider safety audit of major intersections and bus stops across Uyo and other urban centres in Akwa Ibom State. Road infrastructure must be designed not merely to facilitate movement but also to protect human lives.

The relevant authorities should investigate the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s crash, establish the specific factors that contributed to the collision and make the findings available to guide corrective action.

Every fatal crash represents a human tragedy for families and communities, while the destruction of vehicles and other property imposes additional social and economic costs. Observes said.
