Nigerian-Born Administrator Lola Ogunbote Lands Major Chelsea Appointment

Nigerian-born football administrator Lola Ogunbote has been assigned a senior role at Chelsea. According to a report by Vanguard on October 7, 2026, Ogunbote has joined the London club as Head of Football Operations and Player Services.

Ogunbote arrives at Chelsea after nearly five years at Burnley. She had played a key role in developing the Clarets’ women’s football structure. She joined Burnley in 2021 as the club’s first Head of Women’s Football, taking responsibility for areas including football operations, recruitment, player development and the wider organisation of the women’s programme.

Her time at Burnley ended with considerable success. She helped oversee a team that won the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division title and secured promotion.

Before moving into football administration, Ogunbote had an unconventional professional background. She trained as a UK-qualified lawyer and worked at Goldman Sachs before leaving the corporate sector in 2016 to pursue a career in football.

Her football journey subsequently included Arsenal’s Gap Year programme, coaching and player-development roles, and senior football-operations positions. Her experience across administration and football development has now earned her an opportunity at one of the biggest clubs in the women’s game.

It should be noted that Ogunbote has maintained a strong connection with Nigeria and the development of girls’ football in Africa. She is an executive director of US-based Goals for Girls. The lady helped bring its football and leadership programme to Surulere, Lagos, in February 2026, involving 300 female students from 10 schools.

Interestingly, she was recognised on the 2024 Football Black List in the administration category.

Her appointment at Chelsea therefore goes beyond a career move. It places a Nigerian-born woman in a prominent decision-making position at one of Europe’s leading football institutions. Meanwhile, it highlights the growing influence of African talent in football administration.
