2027: Nasir El-Rufai’s Detention Could Hurt APC, Generate Sympathy – Analysts
The continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has become a focal point in Nigeria’s political discourse, with analysts warning of its potential impact on the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to a report by Daily Post on Monday, October 5, 2026, El-Rufai, who has been in custody since February 2026 following corruption-related investigations, was arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on money-laundering charges in March, pleading not guilty.
His detention has drawn mixed reactions, particularly given his prominence in Northern politics and recent alignment with the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Political scientist Dr. Kabiru Said Sufi argued that APC may benefit from El-Rufai’s absence, noting his strategic role within the opposition. “One of the strategists of the opposition has been taken out of the equation,” he said, though he cautioned that renewed public anger could reverse this advantage.
Comrade Aminu Rabiu Kano stressed that perception will shape the case’s political consequences. While detention restricts El-Rufai’s physical participation, he noted that it does not erase his influence. “If people see it as political persecution, it could become a mobilising issue for the opposition,” he warned.
Country Director of SEDSAC, Comrade Umar Muhammad Kofar Naisa, was more direct, insisting that El-Rufai’s detention could hurt APC by generating sympathy votes. He also suggested it may discourage dissent within the ruling party.
Meanwhile, Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, questioned the consistency of Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign, citing El-Rufai’s prolonged detention without conviction.
Ultimately, the political fallout will hinge on how voters interpret the case and how parties deploy it during the 2027 campaign.
