Iran Drops New Strait of Hormuz Move as Tehran and Oman Work on Shipping Arrangements Amid Tensions
According to a report by Al Jazeera on Friday September 25, 2026, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has told his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, that Tehran is working with Oman on arrangements for maritime traffic through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The discussions come as Iran seeks to establish a framework for the movement of commercial vessels through the waterway following months of heightened tensions and disruptions to shipping.
Iran and Oman have previously discussed creating a temporary navigational corridor, with the two countries also considering arrangements for traffic management, information sharing and maritime security.
Oman said in August that technical negotiations would continue toward a permanent navigational corridor and future arrangements for managing the strait.
Araghchi has maintained that the proposed arrangements with Oman do not by themselves amount to a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has linked the restoration of normal navigation to US compliance with commitments under the Islamabad memorandum.
The latest discussions with Moscow come as diplomatic efforts continue over the waterway. On September 22, an Iranian official said Tehran was prepared to reopen the strait within a week if Washington reduced military pressure and lifted its blockade of Iranian ports.
Lavrov, meanwhile, reiterated Russia’s condemnation of the US-Israeli strikes that triggered the conflict and stressed the importance of respecting international law.
The talks highlight continued coordination between Tehran and Moscow as Iran pursues diplomatic and regional arrangements concerning one of the world’s most strategically significant maritime routes.
A planned regional meeting on the proposed shipping arrangements was previously postponed after participating Gulf states failed to reach consensus.
