Civil Servants Give Tinubu Sept 30 Deadline; Demand N500 Petrol, N500,000 Minimum Wage
Nigerian civil servants have asked President Bola Tinubu to urgently respond to mounting economic pressures, demanding cheaper petrol and immediate improvements in workers’ pay.
According to the report by Vanguard Newspaper on September 21, 2026, the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (Trade Union Side) made the demands in a letter to the President, citing rising transportation, food, housing and other living costs.
The council wants petrol prices reduced to N500 per litre and has called for an immediate wage award covering federal, state and local government employees.
It also wants negotiations for a new national minimum wage to begin immediately, proposing that the lowest-paid public servant should earn N500,000 monthly from January 2027.
The workers gave the Federal Government until September 30, 2026, to act, warning that continued hardship could increase tension among workers.
The council criticised reliance on food palliatives, arguing that lowering fuel costs would have wider economic benefits.
It also proposed measures involving local refineries and crude supply, while calling for salary reviews to reflect inflation and improved welfare provisions such as subsidised transport and affordable housing.
